Your workplace or school can help move us one step closer to ending homelessness.
During Homelessness Week in August, schools and workplaces across northeast Victoria will join in Hoodies for Housing to help raise funds and awareness for homelessness support in their region.
What is Hoodies for Housing?
Hoodies for Housing is a simple fundraiser where schools and workplaces select a day during Homelessness Week (3-9 August) where they encourage students or staff to wear a hoodie to school or work. Participants bring a gold coin or $5 donation with them to help raise funds for locals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
How do I get involved?
Simple! If you are interested in being part of Hoodies for Housing or want to learn more about the fundraiser, email communications@beyondhousing.org.au
We have various resources we can share with you to promote the fundraiser around your school or workplace.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this cause matter?
Housing is among the most basic human rights but is something an increasing number of people in our community are being forced to live without.
The average life expectancy of someone sleeping rough is just 44 years old, and with the current cost of living and lack of housing supply, the line between people just managing and not having a roof over their head is paper thin.
Homelessness is also an extreme form of social exclusion. People without stable housing are more likely to be disengaged from the workforce and education, and to cycle through emergency departments, mental health services, and the justice system.
What will donations go towards?
Donations go towards helping those experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. This could be anything from a hygiene pack for someone who can’t afford sanitary products themselves, or one or more nights of crisis accommodation for an individual or family escaping family violence.
We have various examples of what donations can go towards on our website: https://beyondhousing.org.au/get-involved/donating/make-a-donation/
What does Beyond Housing do?
We are the largest community housing organisation and the main entry point for homelessness within the Goulburn and Ovens Murray regions of Victoria.
We own and manage over 1,000 social housing properties across our region that are home to people who were previously experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
We also provide financial support, advocacy, and case management for people struggling to stay in private rentals and organise crisis accommodation for people in urgent need of a place to stay.
What day should we do the fundraiser on?
Most groups are going with Tuesday, 4 August, but for workplaces that have staff working from home, we encourage them to consider what day most people will be in the office.
Can we promote our participation in Hoodies for Housing on our socials?
Please do!
Hoodies for Housing isn’t just about raising money; it’s about raising awareness for one of the biggest and most pressing issues in our community.
Any photos schools/workplaces get of their staff/students in their hoodies can also be sent through to us at communications@beyondhousing.org.au, and we’ll look to use them on our socials.
Feel free to tag us in any social posts so we can share them too!
Can people donate more than a gold coin or $5
Yes!
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.
We want as many people to be involved as possible, even if they don’t have much to give. However, if people want to give more than we wholeheartedly encourage it.
